It’s that time of year again, a time where we sit back and contemplate on the woes of the previous years and make plans for the future. It’s around this time where we make promises to ourselves, where we set goals, make resolutions. It’s also the time to look ahead and rejoice for all the awesome games that are to come.
We’re two weeks into the new year and I cannot wait to play this year’s roster of games. There’s quite a lot planned to release in 2018, but there are only a few that I’m really looking forward to. Today, I’ll presenting you with my list of top upcoming games of 2018. This list is my personal list of games I’m excited for. As always, this is just my personal opinion, and I can guarantee that your list is completely different from mine. Never the less, I am confident these games may find their way onto anyone’s list. Here’s hoping the outcome justifies the hype.
Far Cry 5
I’ll admit, the Far Cry series has gotten a bit stale. Much like the Assassin’s Creed franchise, this series needed something to recreate itself; something fresh. In this upcoming game, we get something we rarely see in video games. The game will take place within the United States, in present day Montana to be exact. A new location and a terrifying villain, along with three intertwining stories will help the Far Cry series make a big comeback later this year. The fact that you are fighting cultists, and not generic bad guys also adds a bit of depth to the game. I hope Ubisoft has done enough to keep players invested in the Far Cry series. Either way, I can’t wait to see what this game has in store for us.
Monster Hunter: World
This hunting based game was something of a surprise. Promising an open world for players to explore and hunt monsters in, Monster Hunter: World will have elements from past games, as well as new additions for gamers who’ve never played a Monster Hunter game. If you want to try it out to see if this game fits your tastes, check out the beta. Personally, I enjoyed these games, and if it delivers what it promised, Monster Hunter: Worlds could be a top selling game of 2018.
God of War
The return of Kratos and the God of War series is a welcome surprise for PS4 owners. The E3 and PSX reveals were fantastic for fans of the series. From the look of things, this game will feature an aged Kratos as he and his son traverse Viking lands. Still a force to be reckoned with, I expect the same blood and savagery from this older Kratos that we’ve come to expect and love. In a new generation of console, this game will look and play stupendously. Here’s hoping Kratos doesn’t lose another family.
Detroit: Become Human
This game landed itself in some hot water recently, as the trailer for the Paris Game Week featured both child abuse and abuse against women. Say what you will about the trailer, the game itself looks incredible. Detroit: Become Human will try to revolutionize the decision based gameplay of modern story focused games. Every decision you make will affect the story, and every consequence will vary depending on your choices, making for an endless experience and replay-ability. For a game based solely on story and player decisions, Detroit: Become Human has a lot to deliver, and it’s one of my most awaited games of the year.
Spider-Man on the PS4 will be an epic game. With the studio behind some of PlayStation’s greatest hits at the helm, Spider-Man is sure to be a successful game. Dawn the web shooters and the costume and fight crime in New York City as the wall crawling superhero. Taking on baddies has never been more fun, and the game elevates the combat using skills and environments to take down your opponents. Various web based attacks as well as hand to hand combat will make the player feel like they’re the web slinging hero! Far from an Arkham clone, Spider-Man should do enough to stand on it’s own, and will be a must play game for fans of the comics and casual gamers alike!
Another Sony exclusive, Days Gone will put you in the boots and leather jacket of a biker in a world run down by the undead. I think the biggest contributing factor to the game in a zombie saturated market are the zombies themselves. Rather than mindless meat bags, or fungus infected clickers, the zombies from Days Gone follow a more fluid motion. They’re basically hordes that hit the player in literal waves. Something like this hasn’t really been seen in video games, at least not to this scale.
Another exciting factor is the story. Sony is well known for their story driven games. Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us, and more are iconic for their stories as well as gameplay. While I believe Days Gone will be more action oriented, I’m sure it will still feature some iconic story telling we’ve come to expect for Sony’s platform.
Red Dead Redemption 2
The last game on my list, and perhaps the most anticipated game of 2018, is non other than Rockstar’s western shooter, Red Dead Redemption 2. Boy has this game been a long time coming. After promises to release late last year it was pushed back to 2018. Fans, including myself, didn’t complain as we are sure the reason for the rescheduled release was to further perfect the game. Without a doubt this game will be one of the biggest launches of 2018, if not the biggest. We can expect a launch similar to Rockstar’s other incredibly successful game, Grand Theft Auto: V.
This game will be a prequel to the game Red Dead Redemption, and will feature a new protagonist. While John Marston was a witty and gritty cowboy, this new protagonist is ruthless and not to be trifled with. Being a Rockstar game, players can expect an incredible experience, from the story, to the mechanics, to the soundtrack and visuals. Red Dead Redemption 2 will be the game of 2018, and I simply cannot wait to sink countless hours into it.
And those were my most anticipated games of 2018. Of course, there are many games I’m looking forward to, including Anthem, Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet, and Crackdown 3. However, the games I listed above stand out in one way or another to me, and I can’t wait to play them all. These are just my personal picks for the top upcoming games of the year, and I know you have your own.
